Ryōiki Tenkai (領域展開, "Domain Expansion") is one of the highest forms of jujutsu sorcery in Jujutsu Kaisen: a manifested innate domain, usually enclosed by a barrier, within which the user's own cursed technique gains a guaranteed-hit effect under normal domain conditions.
A domain materializes the user's "innate domain" — the conceptual space their cursed technique occupies — into physical reality. Inside that domain, the laws of the technique become absolute under standard conditions. For Sukuna, that means anything within the radius is being slashed continuously by Kai (解, "Dismantle"), used against inorganic and weaker organic targets, and Hachi (捌, "Cleave"), used against organic targets and scaled to opponent strength. For Gojō, it means everyone trapped inside is forced to perceive infinite information at once, paralyzing them.
The guaranteed-hit effect is not literally absolute. Counters exist within the jujutsu system, including Hollow Wicker Basket, Simple Domain, Falling Blossom Emotion, and clashing domain barriers. Two opposing domains overlapping is considered the highest form of jujutsu combat — the larger and more refined domain consumes the smaller.
Approximately: ryoh-ee-kee TEN-kai.
Ryōiki (領域) means "domain," "territory," or "realm." Tenkai (展開) means "expansion" or "unfolding." Together: "Domain Expansion." The ō in Ryōiki is a long vowel — pronounced as a held "o" sound, not two separate syllables. As with all Japanese, pitch accent rather than English stress shapes the natural delivery.
Jujutsu Kaisen is a manga by Gege Akutami, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since 2018; the anime adaptation by Studio MAPPA premiered in 2020. Domain Expansion is introduced midway through the series as the dividing line between strong sorcerers and elite ones — many capable sorcerers never learn it at all.
Famous domains in the series include Sukuna's Fukuma Mizushi (Malevolent Shrine), notable for having no enclosing barrier; Gojō's Muryōkūsho (Unlimited Void), which traps targets in infinite information; Mahito's Jihei Endonka (自閉円頓裹, Self-Embodiment of Perfection), which lets him reshape souls within the domain; and Jōgo's Coffin of the Iron Mountain, a fire-and-magma domain.
"Domain Expansion" entered mainstream meme culture during the second season of the anime adaptation. The shouting of the technique's name during release — "Ryōiki Tenkai!" — has become a frequently-quoted phrase among anime fans, and the visual style of each character's domain has inspired extensive fan art and discussion across r/anime and r/JuJutsuKaisen.
