Based on the real 1972 Brooklyn bank robbery by John Wojtowicz. Al Pacino improvised the chants on set; director Sidney Lumet kept the cameras rolling and worked the crowd's reaction into the film. The real Wojtowicz received $7,500 plus 1% of net profits from the studio.
